CHINA TRADE,

CONFIDENTIAL.

[November 28.]

SECTION 1.

[39198]

Sir,

No. 1.

Manchester Chamber of Commerce to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received November 28.)

Manchester, November 27, 1907. FROM previous communications between the Foreign Office and this Chamber the Board of Directors have understood that re-enactment of the Regulations for the registration of trade-marks in China is still in abeyance.

Information has recently been received by the Chamber to the effect that some form of certificate of ownership of trade-marks has been issued by the Chinese Customs authorities, for which a high charge is paid. China merchants cannot recognize any validity whatever in these certificates, and I am desired by the Board to ask for any information which may be in your possession upon the subject, and also as to the light in which these documents are regarded by the Foreign Office.

May I take the opportunity of asking for such information as you feel at liberty to give respecting an Agreement between Great Britain and Germany for the reciprocal protection of trade-marks in China"? Members of the Chamber write asking whether, to enjoy this protection, it is essential that such trade-marks should be registered in both Great Britain and Germany.

I have, &c. (Signed) WALTER SPEAKMAN,

Secretary.
